Whenever possible, I try to build a new piece of fitness gear myself if it means I can save money on the total cost. Sometimes I'm successful, sometimes not. Whether or not DIY is the right approach for you will depend on how handy you are and what tools you have at your disposal.

However, DIY extends beyond building tools. Be willing to experiment with different fitness options, and only keep what works for you.
